Meet Safe Harbor Pictures – a team of sailors, entertainment professionals and technology experts – who have set out to help grow the world of tall ships using innovative and interactive media strategies.
Jon Karlin has been an avid and passionate sailor, boat owner and nautical enthusiast for more than 25 years. As a successful technology entrepreneur since the mid 1980’s, Karlin founded and grew several IT companies that pioneered developments in search technology, mobile advertising and online payment platforms. He also served as Director of Marketing at Microsoft, where he was responsible for global competitive strategy, worldwide partner marketing programs and driving analyst and press coverage for the Windows product group. He has served on numerous boards and brings a wealth of business development and leadership skills to Safe Harbor Pictures, Inc.
Chief Creative Officer
Dan has produced, written or directed more than 300 documentaries, featurettes and episodes of original non-fiction television. As the Emmy-nominated producer of Fox’s long running hit America’s Most Wanted for its first three seasons, he helped pioneer the phenomenon of Reality TV. Dan’s own marketing and production firm Mirage Productions has produced trailers, promotional films, DVD special features, interactive and digital content for scores of major film and television releases including The Matrix, Lawrence of Arabia, Harold & Kumar, and The Larry Sanders Show. Dan has always enjoyed sailing, and four years ago he joined the seagoing world as writer and co-producer of the documentary film Tall Ships: The Privateer Lynx.
Vice President Operations and Business Development
Jonathan Lamas has joined Safe Harbor Pictures as its marketing executive, bringing 20 years of experience building, marketing and monetizing entertainment communities. He comes from Warner Bros. Television and The CW Television Network where he spent close to a decade overseeing digital integrated marketing promotions. There, he produced hundreds of sponsored promotions for shows such as The Vampire Diaries, Supernatural and Smallville.
At Safe Harbor, Jonathan will develop opportunities for sponsors to integrate their brands in our seagoing adventure stories and tall ships events, through a variety of web, mobile and broadcast programs and promotions.
Jonathan is an avid enthusiast of sailing and has a fondness for all things automotive. His contributions as an automotive journalist have included work for Car & Driver, Road and Track, Forbes, U.S. News & World Report and About.com
Producer and “Operations Director”
Joe Wegner is an avid outdoorsman and work out enthusiast from Wiscsonsin. He fell in love with sailing in early 2010 when he stepped foot on the deck of a Tall Ship for the first time during a Tsunami.
Joe has worked in the entertainment industry since 2006 and has appeared in multiple T.V shows. Joe can also be seen in numerous advertisements around the world for Gold’s Gym, Harley Davidson, Beach Body, Jillian Michaels, Verizon, Hewlett Packard, El Polo Loco, The U.S Army, The U.S Air Force, Six Star Nutrition and Call of Duty video games and has appeared in various fitness magazines.
Joe’s work in front of the camera has helped him gain a vast understanding of the workings behind the camera. In recent years he has expanded his interests and has become a devoted videographer, editor, writer and producer. Joe has written, produced and edited several web series and also a feature length film. Joe has produced, filmed and edited corporate videos for Yamaha Music International and a web series for an international designer.
At Safe Harbor Pictures Joe will be wearing multiple caps as the producer of the high quality shows that Safe Harbor Pictures is continually developing and producing.
Production and Creative Advisor
Laura developed, co-wrote and produced the multi-award winning Ocean Voyagers, narrated by Meryl Streep, for Animal Planet International. For the gala celebration of Animal Planet’s 10th Anniversary, Ocean Voyagers was given a special screening, with the London Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra performing the score live. While serving as VP of Production at Feodor Pitcairn Productions, Laura also produced the groundbreaking 8-screen video installation, Ocean Odyssey, for the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History’s Sant Ocean Hall, and a broadcast production of the same name for PBS. Laura has served on the board of the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival, is a co-founder and board member of both the BLUE Ocean Film Festival and Make A Difference Media, and also served on the Google Ocean Advisory Board.
